Learning From The First Dot Com Boom

There are a number of people today making their living from the internet, whether doing it through making $50,000 a year or alternatively through making $5 million a year they are still generating the income that they need to survive in a primary sense from their activities on the internet. And there is nothing wrong with that, after all the dot com boom of the turn of the century has returned in full force and indeed is bigger and better this time around.

Theres nothing wrong with enjoying the livelihood you might get from the internet but at the same time it is also important to realize that there are a number of lessons you should remember from the time of the first dot com boom. The first of those lessons is that the dot com boom eventually went bust and people that did not save money properly went from six figure incomes to basically having to go back to minimum wage jobs because they did not think to save any money.

Now, we have another dot com boom and a number of lessons to learn from. Do not spend money recklessly just because you made it from the internet, treat your internet business just like any other business and make sure that you have savings from it that you can dip into if the unthinkable happens again.

Secondly, it is important to diversify if you can do so at all. There is nothing wrong with making the bulk of your income from the internet but if you can find a way to advance to offline activities as well, then things are going to be better for you if this second dot com boom ever happens to go bust. Planning ahead means doing a number of different things and as a businessman, the more contingencies you leave yourself the better off the overall health of your business is going to be.

These are just two of the many different lessons that people should be learning from the first dot com boom. Getting a wider range of advertising, more efficient monetization strategies and a number of other things all factor into it when you take a look at the lessons being learned by the people that were around at that time and you should be taking those lessons as well.

Remember that nothing lasts forever and the people that succeed in business are the ones that have things to fall back on when one of their plans goes down the drain. Adaptability is a critical aspect in any business but when you are in the dot com field which can change completely in a second, adaptability becomes arguably the most critical thing for you to have.

Safeguarding Your Home Business

You have probably passed big signs by construction sites that brag about how many days they have gone without a work related or lost time accident. For most businesses and industries, safety is an important part of their business plan as accident costs come straight off the bottom line. Not only do you pay an insurance premium to cover accidents, before the insurance starts paying, you will incur a deductible. The insurance premium and deductible comes from the bottom line, impacting your profits.

If you conduct business in your home office, the possibility of an injury claim increases dramatically with the number of customers. It is not all about the cost as if customers to your business seem to get hurt frequently, it can have a negative effect on your reputation. People may become fearful about visiting you for fear of getting hurt. Then there are those who will come see you, actually hoping to get hurt so they might end up owning your business.

Slip and fall accidents and trips are the most common for most businesses and a home business is not immune to these claims. However, there are steps you can take to reduce the potential for liability. Remember, just because a claim is filed, does not automatically make you and your insurance company responsible for the accident. Most states have laws that protect companies from lawsuits, by mandating that people have to take a certain amount of responsibility for their own actions.

During inclement weather, a company has 24 hours from the conclusion of an event before they are considered responsible for an accident involving a build up of snow and ice in their parking lots or on their sidewalks. If a customer slips on ice in the midst of a heavy winter storm, most courts find that they ventured out at their own risk and the business should not be responsible for their decision.

However, it is in your best interest to make sure you have the materials in place to remove the risk as soon as possible. Do not get caught up in the 24hour window as your customers should be important to you and allowing one of them to hurt because its only been 10hours since the snow stopped may protect you from liability but not from the wrath of the customer.

Most claims from accidents occurring inside your office space can be eliminated if you make sure spills and trip hazards are removed as soon as they happen. Allowing a spill to remain on the floor can be considered willful negligence, making you liable for any injuries that result. If you leave a hazard on the floor without properly warning your customers that a hazard exists, you will being paying the medical expenses for someone who tripped over the hazard.

Ways To Advertise Your Business

When it comes to finding the best method to advertise your new business, there are a host of factors to take into consideration. The first thing to realize is that while one size does not fit all in the world of advertising, there are certain truths that we can hold dear. The key to finding the best way to advertise is in finding out what you can say about your business, how best to say it and in what avenues this message is best received. Once you have these answers, you will be on your way to a successful marketing campaign and that much closer to making your business a success.

The first thing you need to do as an aspiring advertiser is find your potentialaudience and speak directly to them. Many advertising campaigns are lost before they are begun, because the originator did not have a clear message or an effective strategy for speaking to his potential customers. One of the most common pitfalls in marketing strategy begins with the conceit that customers actually care about your advertisement.

They do not. Think about how you perceive the advertisements around you. If you see them as annoyances, thats twice as much thought as the average consumer gives them. In order to break free from the pack, you have to find a message thats worth hearing, otherwise, you will have so much junk mail in the trash or pop-ups clicked away without a second glance.

One of the most powerful ways to advertise is to speak to a very specific and truncated section of your customer base. Rather than encompass the entirety of your business with an ad (such as "Get Your Groceries Here", you look for those micro niches that are so important for early success and can create the word of mouth advertising that is the most powerful form.

So, instead of a generic “Get Your Groceries Here” campaign, you look for the weaknesses in your competitors. What section of the customer base are they ignoring, that you could swoop in and invite to your store? Perhaps you could send out a marketing campaign solely focusing on health foods, something the larger supermarket chain has failed to do. You will know what these things are by thoroughly researching your market and knowing the trends to follow. http://squidoo.com/download-free-music-psp-1

Another important factor when it comes to deciding what form your initial ad campaigns will take is what your competitor is doing. If they are marketing successfully in the local newspapers, with ads that really can not be improved upon, you would be foolish to try and start your own newspaper ad campaign. Fighting fire with fire will only succeed in getting you burned. Just as with the marketing demographic targeting, find your competitors weak point and go there. This is the best way to establish your presence in the advertising world and make your own mark. Before long, a new competitor will hopefully look at whatever advertising media you chose, see that your campaigns are unbeatable and be forced to look elsewhere.

Profiting From Your Home Based Business

In the past, home based businesses seemed relegated to the scam section of the National Enquirer. Advertisements offering stay at home moms and unhappy workplace men a chance to make thousands a month stuffing envelopes or making little crafts. Of course, most of these opportunities were simply a chance to put your own ad in the same places and offer the same thing. Since at no point in the whole fiasco is an actual service or product rendered, these businesses rarely succeeded. But with the advent of the internet, there are some legitimate home based businesses and success within them is largely determined by your creativity and desire to work toward a goal. There are even many websites that offer you a head start in your home based business and we will look at two of them now.

The most prominent place for such a business is, of course, the internet auction giant, eBay. There are people on eBay that literally are making thousands of dollars a month. Are they the exception, rather than the rule? Of course but they are out there. And there are plenty of others who are making a decent amount of money. It may not be enough to quit their day jobs but enough to provide a nice supplement to their regular income. What success on eBay depends upon is research and finding a niche. These two components, which will tell you what product you can sell successfully on the site, as well as what the most powerful sales strategies are, will lead to at least a little extra money pouring in.

Another popular site that allows people to work from the comfort of their homes is Cafe Press. This website has a remarkably simple business model but it can be rather powerful in the right hands. Basically, with the help of a tool such as Adobe Photoshop, you create images or slogans and then sell t-shirts, caps, mugs and other paraphernalia with that design on the front. You supply the design, Cafe Press supplies the merchandise and the website hosting. You, in turn, get a commission on everything sold. The competition on Cafe Press is outrageous, so do not think you will be successful without a clear marketing strategy and some highly original designs.

Unless you have a terrific understanding of what goes into making an eBay account or a Cafe Press store hot, your best bet for true success will come from starting your own website. Original ideas and sound marketing is what creates wealth. It is highly unlikely you will be able to quit your day job through sales of t-shirts on Cafe Press but it is entirely possible that you could create your own internet empire with enough ingenuity and hard work. The internet has made working from home a wonderful opportunity but you have to want it. A lot of people think working from home is equivalent to not working at all. This is not the case. In many circumstances, you will have to work twice as hard for half the income you could make for someone else. But it is that determination, that fearlessness when it comes to failure and rejection that will eventually mean true success.

Pay-Per-Click Advertising

As you may or may not already know, one of the most important parts of online business is traffic. Arguably, it is the most important part of business if for no other reason than the fact that your income is going to be directly related to the amount of traffic you get. It is impossible to make a living through an online endeavour without a lot of traffic. While there are organic processes that people can use in order to build up their traffic at low cost or no cost rates, some people tend to get quite impatient for traffic and are looking for a way to accelerate the process.

Well, the main way to accelerate the process nowadays is through the use of pay per click advertising or PPC advertising for short. Now, PPC advertising is a concept that was created by Google and a concept that pretty much revived online advertising in 2003 after the first dot com bubble had collapsed. Now that people were actually just paying for clicks through to their website rather than just ad impressions, there were a lot more people willing to take a shot at pay per click advertising.

The main advantage that PPC has over free and organic traffic generation is primarily an advantage due to speed. If you want to get traffic to your website quickly and instantaneously, then you are going to have to do it through techniques that cost money, the primary one being PPC. You can use PPC to get traffic to your website within hours, whereas free traffic generation methods are probably going to take at least a few weeks before you really start seeing some results from them.

There are exceptions to this rule of course but in general you will find that ad campaigns based entirely on PPC are going to mature a lot faster than ad campaigns based entirely on organic measures or free advertising from different sources. So, whether you decide to use PPC advertising for your online business is purely a matter of what you the business owner is looking to accomplish.

If you want to build your website up slowly, get a customer base of loyal people that visit your website frequently and ultimately make sure that people are really satisfied with your website and have had a chance to look over it, then you should probably stay away from PPC in the early stages so that you can spend that money instead on different parts of your website. However, if you are only interested in getting as much traffic as possible as early on as possible, then no other advertising method can even come close to matching what PPC can do for you.

Organizing Your Home Office

When it comes to running your own business you wear many hats. You are the boss, the supervisor, the secretary and more. With all of the jobs you do to run your business you need your time to be well spent. Because of this it is very important that your home office be well organized. If you have a meeting concerning a financial loan that could make or break your business expansion, you need to know where your business plan is and be able to get any other documents or materials needed A.S.A.P.

Organization is basically everything having a place and the items being put in their place after use. If you have children you have probably told them to put their backpack up in a designated space so that they can grab it quick and hit the school bus, so they are not late. It never fails at least once they miss the bus because they have spent time searching for a folder or their left sneaker. We as adults certainly do not want this scenario to be a part of our lives.

To prevent this type of chaos form occurring you need to think storage. bookcases, shelves, filing cabinets and storage containers all hold the items you need. Having a container or storage item to place each item will keep you from losing important documents or phone numbers. Once everything has its own space be sure to label everything. Labels allow you to be more efficient with your time. You can take one look at your desk organizer and see that your weekly report folder is on the second shelf or that the contract file is in the top shelf of your filing cabinet.

You will be able to grab what you need and get out the door. No wasted time or frustration of searching for needed items. When your office is properly organized it also gives off a sense of peace and tranquility. You walk into your office it is clean, tidy and everything is in its place. If it were the opposite you would walk in and see papers covering your desk, the trash is overflowing, reports in folders and binders are in stacks over here and over there. Chaos, nerve racking and sweat inducing panic is what this room screams at you.

Running your own business carries enough stress inducers. You deserve to allow your life to be as tranquil and relaxed as possible. If your office operates smoothly thanks to organization you will be at peace. You will be able to be calm, cool and collected at your next business meeting and what is more impressive than a business man or woman who has everything all together and a smile on his or her face.
